My friend Jenny asked me to do something about recycling, so this is for her. Hi Jenny!
So...recycling. Isn't that a fad now? Isn't it popular? I know that things have to be popular before people get on the band wagon. But I think that recycling is def coming up as a fad. So, it's cool now.
Kind of like the presidential race. Before too long Ryan Seacrest will be having us calling in our votes on Obama or Hillary!
Well, whether it's popular or not, we all ready could make an effort to do our part. And, you don't even have to do that much. I personally don't like being "preached" to about things, so that is not what I wanted to do with this shirt. However, I was able to find statistics that made me think -- Holy Cow...that's wicked wasteful. So, maybe it will have the same effect on you.
Here are some things to think about (research conducted and reported by Oberlin University:
If every household reused ONE paper grocery bag just for ONE shopping trip, we could save 60,000 annually.
Every individual uses the equivalent of 2 pine trees of paper products a year.
The energy that is saved by recycling one aluminum can could run a television for three hours.
And...this is the one that really got me.
The U.S. landfilled 36 BILLION aluminum cans last year. That is a scrap value of $600 million dollars!
$600 million dollars. Gee, what could our economy do with that. Maybe we should have our public officials out picking up cans! Aren't we in a deficit?
So, just give recycling a shot when you can. It's easy to recycle cans, plastic and glass. Actually I have found that if I put a bag of aluminum cans out for recycling, they are usually picked up by homeless people before the recycling truck ever gets there. If you look at it that way, we could actually be helping the homeless...employing them with the job of taking our cans and turning them in. It gives them money and something to do. It makes our world a little bit better. And, it could possibly cut down on exit ramp vet's.
Just by recycling, maybe we could reverse the national deficit, save the Earth and help put an end to homelessness! It's worth a shot.
